The University of Helsinki has been ranked among the top 100 research-based universities in the world. Located in Helsinki, Finland, this university gives students ample opportunity to learn more about the issues and cultures of the world. The Department of Media and Communication Studies is focused specifically on “gaining an understanding of related phenomena in connection with social and cultural changes.” The University of Helsinki particularly emphasizes scholarly research, which can be done either at their Helsinki campus or in one of their study abroad programs around the world. Students are expected to conduct their own research in the field of communication, while at the same time being taught through either the school’s bachelor’s or master’s program. Both programs culminate in a well-researched student thesis.
